Meish Ataan hurries past his guards to answer the incoming transmission. The two field leaders of his platoon await him at the command module. As he approaches, one of his field leaders looks at him.

“Premier Ataan, it has been hours since our last contact. This could be the message we have been waiting for.”

Ataan inhales heavily and signals for the transmission to be received. The visual relay blinks then shows the image of Warviin Roka. Ataan and the field leaders bow to her.

“Warviin, welcome to the ground.”

“I wish it was under better circumstances.”

“We all do.”

An uncomfortable air lingers between them. Ataan’s anxiousness to ask his next question is not hidden well.

“Please tell me this transmission contains welcomed news.”

The Warviin remains stern, giving no indications as to what her answer will be.

After a short moment of agonizing pause, her face softens, “We found him,” she said.

A sigh of relief exits Ataan. His field leaders exchange comforting gestures.

“Where?”

“As we suspected, en route to the port.”

“Which side of the valley do they approach from?”

“The trajectory of their path leads into Rilian, the abandoned township near the valley.”

Ataan’s head hangs down for a moment and when his gaze returns to Roka, a hopefulness is present in his eyes.

“We have waited so long for a break of this kind,” Ataan said.

“Indeed, we have Premier,” -the Warviin’s brow furrows- “but, now is not the time for celebration. The matter of apprehending Master Kowheah still lingers. He will not go easily.”

“How far is Master Kowheah from the township?”

“Two days at most.”

Ataan’s gaze wanders from the Warviin, thoughts bubbling up inside him. His attention snaps back to her.

“I could be there in a day. Allow me to go to the township.”

“The Seykyr is already en route. She is the one tasked with bringing Master Kowheah in.”

“Warviin, please, I have a history with Kuuya. Perhaps, there is still a chance to end this war in a peaceful manner.”

“I believe we are far past that point, Premier.”

“That is possible, but it is not certain.”

Roka’s chest expands then deflates quickly, a puff of dry air leaving her lungs.

“Master Kowheah is desperate,” she said, “that is why he is on the move. Vix has not held a proper command station in months. He has hidden away since their last major loss. A change in methods for him.”

“All the more reason for him to be open to a new truce.”

Her head tilts, “All the more reason for him to be erratic.”

“Warviin, please, allow me to attempt this. Kuuya is a good leader, a moral individual. He fought against the oppression of his own, and he fears that the Alliance may reintroduce that oppression. If I can make a show of good faith to him, appear to him not as a threat, but as an ally, as a friend, maybe he will finally see that his fear is unfounded.”

The Warviin falls silent for a long moment, her gaze looking somewhere out of view. Ataan glances at his field leaders. They share the same unsure look as him.
